Everything you want to know about Beautiful Kani Shawls by Pashmoda

Kani shawls are one of the most loved pashmina shawls of historians that accentuate style and keep you warm as well.

If you are looking for a Kashmiri shawl online, then Kani is indeed one of the best pashmina you can ever buy. Kani Shawl is spun by using traditional wooden needles on a handloom. The Mughal pattern crafted over them strikes a bewitching spell on every woman.

Kani Shawls have been registered under GI i.e. Geographical Indication Act given by The Craft Development Institute. These shawls are made as per predefined designs. The speciality of these shawls is that they have knots and only trained craftsmen have knowledge to do it the right way.

Kani shawls are like an ethereal treat for craft lovers and have a unique and timeless demeanour. The beautiful patterns, soothing colours and elegance make them a perfect pick for not only the art lovers but also the fashionistas across the globe.

How Kani is woven? – The Technique

Kani Shawls are just an exclusive and extraordinary expression of art. The shawl is woven using wooden needles or wooden sticks known as Tujis or Kanis. The intricacies of weft weaving can easily be seen in the making. These Kashmiri shawls score pretty high in the eyes of craft patrons.

Most of the Kani shawls are made using 80% cashmere and the rest 20% is shared by silk and other wool to give strength to the fabric. But, these shawls impart a more classy and ethereal look when they are made in 100% pure cashmere wool.

The most surprising fact is that every Kani artisan is able to weave only one inch every day. Their patience level is unbelievable. Sometimes it depends on the labyrinth patterns as well as the complexity of the designs.

It may take up to 3 to 36 months to complete a Kani shawl completely depending on the complexity of the design.

Types of Kani Shawls

Since the Kani shawls are not embroidered, these are exceptionally classic, timeless and lightweight.  Have a look at the types of Kani Shawls that you can buy from the market or buy these designer Kashmiri shawls online.

  • Kani Jamawar Shawl

It’s quite surprising to know that a Jamawar Shawl may take up to two years to complete. The reason is that the entire base of the shawl is spanned with Kani patterns and motifs.

  • Palladaar Kani Pashmina

This shawl takes less time to complete as compared to Jamawar Shawl because the Kani is only weaved at the borders or Pallas in the local language. This Kani Shawl gets ready in just a few months.

  • Moon Shawl

The beautiful moon or Chand-Daar Shawls feature a full medallion design at the center. Along with that all four corners also have similar medallion designs.

Why Kani Shawl falls under GI Protection?

When a product is given the status of GI (Geographical Indication), this entitles it to the right to protect its originality.  This means no one can sell a shawl with this name at any other place. It was done by the government of J & K to protect the originality of the Kani Shawls. The GI Act also makes sure that no other country or state has the right to produce or copy such shawls.

Here are some of the reasons that led to the GI protection of Kani Shawls.

  • These Kashmiri Shawls have a long history that is documented for more than 300 years back in the Mughal era.
  • The base fabric used in Kani Shawl is Pashmina. This wool is special as it carries a unique fineness coming from a specific goat found in particular climate and geographical conditions.
  • The Kani Shawls are manufactured using a specific code or talim that can only be done by the local weavers.

GI Protection act ensures that things received by the customers are 100% genuine and authentic. Apart from that, GI Act also makes sure that these handicrafts enhance their prominence in national as well as international markets.
